The problem
People with unresolved or insecure immigration status face instability, fear, and significant barriers to rebuilding their lives in the UK. Access to free immigration advice is limited, particularly for those with complex cases. At the same time, opportunities for integration such as ESOL classes, stable housing, employment, and community connection are often limited. These challenges are intensified by systemic barriers and a hostile political environment that restrict rights, erode trust in institutions, and deepen social and economic exclusion. Our work at Notre Dame Refugee Centre seeks to help people overcome these challenges.
Our goal
To work alongside people with insecure or unresolved immigration status to create lasting change. Our aim is not only to support individuals through immediate challenges, but to equip them with the tools, knowledge and confidence to shape their own futures.
Our approach
Our work is grounded in four interconnected areas:
Access to justice
Everyone deserves timely, high-quality immigration advice.
We provide free, accredited legal advice and representation so people can understand their rights and options clearly. By removing financial and practical barriers to legal support, we reduce uncertainty, build confidence, and enable people to take informed steps forward with greater security.
Building pathways to integration
Belonging is about more than legal status; it’s about connection, confidence and opportunity.
We create spaces for people to learn English, prepare for employment, and build relationships within their communities. Through ESOL and wider support, people gain the skills and networks that make long-term inclusion and independence possible.
Learning, adapting and growing
To remain effective, we continue to learn and evolve.
We invest in our people, strengthen our services, and respond to changes in law, policy and community need. Through feedback and co-design with the communities we serve, we ensure our work stays relevant, inclusive and impactful.
